Well some of the stuff like the yahoo and others will have you doing a reinstall of your windows just because its freeware donesn't mean its not bad. After all its not open source and you have like 3 programs for spyware this will slow the best systems down spybot and programs like that are usually cover by a real antivirus so i would give MacAfee a try Free is not always good! Your machine will be dead soon!

Blogger Rocky Geddam said...

you should include Konfabulator on the list. An incredibly uselful little widget driven tool - a lot of things like calendar, reminders, stickies, clocks, battery meters, weather, gmail-alerts u name it! Used to be a subscription service, free since yahoo aquired it.

In response to Derek, I'm not sure that I would go with McAffee over Avast. I've used both, and avast is MUCH more lightweight while still catching eveything I've tested. It also catches some spyware, though it is not sold as a spyware scanner. What I really like about avast though is that is has 7 different "providers" which are basically like firewalled proxies to your different network services. Each "provider" can be started or stopped independently, so you only use the ones you need.

HEHE... NICE LIST OF APPLICATIONS FOR A NEW COMPUTER, BUT ILL BE HONEST WITH YOU, THOUGH THE SOFTWARE IS FREE AND ALL, ITS NOT ALL GUARENTEED TO WORK. I PERSONALLY DONT EVEN USE HALF OF THAT STUFF... JUST KEEP THE COMPUTER SIMPLE. ONE THING I'VE NOTICED IS THAT MICROSOFT ALWAYS SEEMS TO WORK BEST WITH THEIR OWN SOFTWARE... SO JUST STICK TO DDL'ING WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER, WINDOWS ANTI-SPYWARE, AND PWRTOYS' N STUFF FROM THEM. THEN DDL ANY OTHER APPS THAT MEET UR SPECS. BUT HAVING EVERYTHING ON UR LIST INSTALLED ON UR COMPUTER IS LIKE A WASTE OF CPU THREADING. FOR ALL I KNOW, IF UR JUST A BASIC USER, DONT USE EVERYTHING ON THE LIST, JUST THE ONES YOU NEED.

I'd add foobar 2000 ( http://www.foobar2000.org/ ) music player - i prefer it over winamp and itunes, realy good app

7:23 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah the quicktime real and divx installs are real bulky I would go with VLC Player it plays practacally everything. and it looks like it plays quicktime and real too. But just incase it doesn't real alterantive and quicktime alternative are much better freeware

hi bunsal,

nice list. check out my list which i had put up at my blog. MSN and yahoo msngr r really cool. But there is a hype that Google is coming out with its own version of IM. Let's hope for the best.

Keep up the good job bunsal.

You forgot VLC Media Player and Quicktime Alternative!

Foobar2000 is a far superior music player than either iTunes or Winamp.

Skip the real player and use real alternative instead. I still don't trust real after all the crap they have pulled in the past!

For unix users who miss utilities like find and grep, the cygwin tools are indispensible . There's nothing like the magic of being able to do du -sm * | sort -n to find sort files and folders by size.

Most of this software I use everyday and it works a lot better than the free software on a new PC. Most of the free software that comes on a new PC is garbage, and I recommend to all my customers is to remove it. These apps work without the bloatware/spy-ware/add-ware than many of the other so-called free applications have. I also have a list of free software and repair utilties so check them out at homtechsol

I like Chaos Manager a freeware organizer with a simple and easy look and feel.

First, your commenter Derek is a complete tool. MacAffee and Norton Antivirus are two of the biggest POS bloatware programs anywhere, and the Yahoo! and Google programs are some of the most widely used, and useful, anywhere. they're successfully working on millions of computers.
Second, For an rss reader/podcatcher try Happyfish beta. www.thirstycrow.net

Third, never take advice from ANYONE LIKE ABE, WHO TYPES IN ALL CAPS.

Fourth here's a list of other apps:

Smart FTP
DeepBurner cd/dvd burner freeware
Microsoft antispyware beta
Airsnare (wifi packet tracker)
ASAP utilities for msoffice
Azureus p2p bittorrent client
Cute pdf Writer
Ultimate Boot CD

Although it's not "free" anymore, you have to pay to download from PCMag, I find the most important app for me is CookieCop. Yes Firefox/Adblock do a great job, but most importantly, I can block ALL of the sites that pass out ad/spy-ware and the like. It's getting older and here are a few things that get by it now, but it is still my fav.

Good list, but I hate bloatware:

Security

AntiVir - No-frills, solid antivirus.

Internet

FeedReader - Open-source RSS news reader. Simple, lightweight (1.5MB and no .NET Framework crap needed), free and customizable. Owns the competition, any day.

Miranda IM - Open-source multi protocol instant messenger client (ICQ, AIM, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo, Gadu-Gadu, Tlen, Netsend and other protocols). Simple, lightweight (943 KB), free.

VoipBuster - Internet telephony (1.8MB)

Multimedia

XMPlay - audio player. Simple, free and lightweight (316 KB).

ADB2 - converts DVD to XviD video with Ogg Vorbis audio.

8:07 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

VLC and the Codec Pack don't work together or anything. VLC will play anything without the Codec pack, and the Codec Pack will enable media player or any other player to play everything.

Personally, the codec pack is a mess. I'd stick with VLC alone and install a single codec if you do find some obscure format that VLC can't play.

Keep up the good work. I appreciate it when someone takes the time to do this for others. I also like the following programs, but check to see if they are still freeware:

1. syncback- for backing up files

2. eazyvcd- to backup dvd's

3. virtualdub- to edit movie clips

4. flyakiteosx- make your pc look
like a mac all in one program (not really "essential")

5. google earth- aerial view of the entire world

6. Intellisync for Yahoo and MSN- keeps your outlook address book and to do list in sync with your online email accounts

7. Limewire- spyware-free peer to peer filesharing program

8. Microsoft Antispyware- works well, autoscans, not sure how long it will be free

9. Spamhilator- helps seperate spam from your wanted email

10. RegscrubXP- cleans unwanted registry entries

11. VoipBuster- like skype except you can call land lines and cellphones for free

12. Windows Desktop Search- for searching for keywords within your pdf, word, text documents etc.

13. Windows XP, Photoshop CS, Office 2003 -yeah right!

There's my contribution. HOpe it helps someone.

Nice list, but you should also include Shirusupad (www.shirusupad.tk).

Also, technically Firefox isn't safer, it just has a smaller userbase. Symantec's 2004 security report shows that as Firefox's popularity grows, so does its exploits. Also, the Mozilla render engine is still annoyingly pedantic about standards such as the latest CSS one.

A free IE-based browser I'd recommend is Maxthon (www.maxthon.com)

Just wanted to suggest you add the plug-in Sage (RSS reader) to your list. It's a free download to Firefox and it works just great. Easy to add feeds and you can group them in folders if you're an organizer-type.

Excellent collection, really!

What I suggest as PIM tool (instead of KeyNote etc.) is: TreePad Lite:

http://www.treepad.com/treepadfreeware/

It's simple and works perfect.
What makes it superior in my eyes is that everything is stored in one *.TXT like file. So, even if you have a computer without treepad, you still have all the text accessible.
